EFFECT OF RESISTANCE TRAINING ON DISEASE ACTIVITY, MUSCLE, AND BONE IN PATIENTS WITH CROHN??S DISEASE

Abstract
Crohn's Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, which results in a loss of lean tissue and bone mass, possibly because of decreased nutrition and corticosteroid usage. Exercise training is effective in healthy individuals for increasing lean tissue mass and bone mineral density, but there is a fear that it may exacerbate disease activity in patients with Crohn's Disease. PURPOSE The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effect of 7 months of resistance training on disease activity, lean tissue mass, and bone mineral density in patients with Crohn's Disease. METHODS Individuals with Crohn's Disease (in remission) either volunteered to participate in resistance exercise training (EX; 7 females, 3 males, age 41.7y trained for 7 months, 3d/wk, 3 sets of 8–10 reps, 12 exercises) or as control subjects (CNT; 5 females, 1 male, age 52.2y). Disease activity was measured by questionnaire (Harvey and Bradshaw, 1980). Lean tissue mass and bone mineral density (lumbar spine and whole body) were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Strength was measured as the 1-repetition maximum on the bench press and leg press in the EX group. RESULTS Disease activity was unchanged in EX and CNT over the 7 months. EX significantly increased lean tissue mass by 0.84 kg (2.2%) (p < 0.05), while CNT had no change (−0.68 kg; −1.9%). There were no changes in lumbar spine (EX: −0.2%; CNT: +0.4%) or whole body (EX: −0.7%; CNT: −0.6%) BMD in either group. EX significantly increased leg press (+37%) and bench press (+25%) strength. CONCLUSION Resistance training in patients with Crohn's Disease results in increases in lean tissue mass and strength, with no effect on disease activity. Seven months of resistance training was insufficient for increasing bone mineral density. Supported by the University of Saskatchewan President's NSERC fund.
