Abstract
Les vestiges formant le site gallo-romain de la « Delle de Derrière l'Église » ont été mis en évidence au cours d'un diagnostic conduit par Benjamin Hérard (INRAP) en janvier 2005, dans l'emprise d'un projet de lotissement développé par la société SEPRODIM EDIFIDES sur la commune de Giberville, au nord-est de la périphérie caennaise.La surface couverte par ce projet avoisine quelque 2 ha, au pied du versant occidental de la vallée de la Gronde, modeste affluent de l'Orne, en bordure immédiate de l'agglomération et de l'église médiévale de Giberville dont les origines, de même que celles du cimetière aujourd'hui recouvert par la voirie contemporaine, remontent à l'époque mérovingienne.Au pied du versant, en rive même de la Gronde, ont jadis été signalées, vers 1830, les ruines d'un grand édifice en pierre attribué aux II e s. et III e s., conservées en élévation sur plus de 1 m.Le plan de ce bâtiment était formé d'une succession d'au moins sept « bassins » carrés au fond dallé, mesurant 1,30 m de côté, dépourvus d'entrée et alignés parallèlement au cours d'eau.Un grand trépied de bronze découvert dans ce même site a été publié dans la Statistique monumentale d'Arcisse de Caumont en 1847, et figure aujourd'hui dans une vitrine du musée de Normandie.
