Merck Vaccines in West Point PA bezocht viel mij bij binnenkomst in de aankomsthal direct een oude poster op met de woorden van de titel van deze oratie: "VACCINES ARE FOR PEOPLE, NOT FOR PROFIT" Deze tekst intrigeerde mij, omdat je zoiets niet zou verwachten bij één van de grootste farmaceutische bedrijven in de wereld en één van de marktleiders op het gebied van humane vaccins.Een dergelijke tekst verwacht je eerder op een zestiger jaren pamflet of op een spandoek tijdens protesten gericht tegen de farmaceutische industrie.Met een totale omzet van Merck in 2010 van 46 miljard $ waarvan 3,5 miljard $ voor vaccins (1), zou je toch tenminste kunnen vermoeden dat winst wel degelijk belangrijk is.Dus waar komt een dergelijke slogan vandaan.In de eerste plaats moeten we ons realiseren dat farmaceutische bedrijven veelal starten vanuit wetenschappelijke doorbraken waarbij idealisme nog een relatief grote rol speelt.Een wetenschapper is meestal meer geïnteresseerd in het ontwikkelen van een farmaceutisch product (geneesmiddel of vaccin) en de ziekte die daarmee kan worden genezen of voorkómen, dan in de economische aspecten daarvan.Aangezien de farmaceutische industrie nog voor een groot deel gebaseerd is op Research & Development, kun je ook nog steeds iets van de passie van de wetenschappers terugvinden in de houding van de bedrijven, althans op papier.Uit studies blijkt dat extra niet--financiële beloningen voor wetenschappers, zoals zelfstandigheid, vrijheid van handelen, erkenning en mogelijkheid tot publicatie, tenminste zo effectief zijn als puur financiële beloningen (2).Dus vanuit dat perspectief is het wellicht niet vreemd dat idealistische slogans worden gebruikt door de farmaceutische industrie als een soort van rechtvaardiging.We zien ook dat de bevolking nogal afkeurend staat tegenover het verdienen aan medicijnen, oftewel het verdienen aan de ellende van anderen.Hoe reëel dit soort overwegingen zijn, wilde ik vandaag graag bespreken vanuit verschillende gezichtspunten.
