Des deux côtés de l’Atlantique, à partir des années 1970, lestravaux, colloques et publications consacrés à la religion populaire ont connuun essor spectaculaire. Les historiens, en rejoignant les folkloristes, les anthropologueset les sociologues, contribuèrent à faire de la religion populaire unchamp de recherche très prometteur. Cependant, à partir de 1975-1980, descontroverses et des critiques se sont développées. Elles ont été assez fortespour remettre en cause, sur le plan épistémologique et sur le plan sociohistorique,un concept qui pouvait être regardé comme un avatar malheureuxdu structuralisme. Depuis, si la notion de religion populaire n’a pas disparu,les débats antérieurs se sont atténués au profit d’une révision qui insiste,aujourd’hui, sur les marges, les dissidences, qui tient compte de la transformationde l’idée et de la pratique missionnaire, qui admet l’hypothèse d’unévanouissement du religieux dans nos sociétés au moment où s’affirme l’autonomiedes comportements individuels.
