Estimates of the relationships between geophysical variables and microwave backscatter/emission are important for the evaluation of atmosphere-ocean interaction, as well as energy, and mass transfer across this interface. We evaluate ship-based passive microwave brightness temperatures <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M1"><mml:mrow><mml:mfenced separators="|"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>b</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced></mml:mrow></mml:math> at 37 and 89 GHz and active polarimetric backscatter at 5.5 GHz (C-band), as these relate to buoy-derived ocean wave parameters for distinct wave regimes in the southern Beaufort Sea. Microwave emission and backscatter are shown to be sensitive to the ocean surface physical roughness as defined by the significant wave height <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M2"><mml:mrow><mml:mfenced separators="|"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>H</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced></mml:mrow></mml:math>, compared to wind speed. The <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M3"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>b</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math> shows significant correlation with <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M4"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>H</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math>, with the strongest correlation for the H-polarization channel at 37 and 89 GHz. Active co-<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M5"><mml:mrow><mml:mfenced separators="|"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>γ</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>c</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>o</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced></mml:mrow></mml:math> and cross-<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M6"><mml:mrow><mml:mfenced separators="|"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>γ</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>c</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>r</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>o</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>s</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>s</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:mfenced></mml:mrow></mml:math> polarization ratios at 40° incidence angle are associated with <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M7"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>H</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math>, with the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M8"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>γ</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>c</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>o</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math> increase proportional to <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M9"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>H</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math>. The polarimetric coherence parameter <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M10"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>ρ</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>V</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>V</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>H</mml:mtext><mml:mtext>H</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math> at 20° also shows an inverse relationship with <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M11"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>H</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math> because of an expected decorrelation of complex returns with greater surface roughness.
