Research requiring radioactive ion beams (RIBs) are rapidly expanding worldwide. On-line-isotope-separation RIB facilities, in particular, present a unique and challenging environment for ion source operation. Ion sources are required to ionize short-lived isotopes, in a very high radiation environment, efficiently, rapidly, reliably, and selectively so that beams with small emittances can be formed, mass separated, and transported to experiments and accelerators. Various types of ion sources have been constructed and modified to satisfy the scientific and technical requirements. This paper reviews some of the ion source challenges and solutions.
