O objetivo deste artigo é analisar as questões levantadas pelas principais estratégias de tradução mobilizadas entre 1964 e 1984 para traduzir as representações romanescas do joual - a saber, o socioleto, fortemente anglicizado e linguisticamente empobrecido falado pelas classes populares de Montreal - para leitores anglo-canadenses inquietos com o avanço do movimento independentista no Quebec e com a chegada ao poder, em 1976, do Partido Quebequense. Após apresentar as características sociolinguísticas do joual, assim como o duplo uso, político e literário, que dele fizeram alguns escritores a partir de 1960, trata-se de identificar os problemas de ordem lexical propostos aos tradutores e as diversas soluções que estes preconizaram. Isso nos permitiu descobrir 1) as imagens de si e do outro que essas soluções veiculam; 2) a natureza dos processos de domesticação que elas subscrevem; 3) a maneira como essas soluções contribuíram para reforçar ou, excepcionalmente, subverter as expectativas do público anglo-canadense; 4) a presença, inevitável, de marcadores de re-enunciação que, inscritos em certas escolhas lexicais, dependem da subjetividade do tradutor e, consequentemente, do conflito das enunciações subjacentes a toda reescritura. Sob essa ótica, uma atenção particular é dada às duas traduções (1964; 1984) do romance Le Cassé de Jacques Renaud (1964), procurando levantar questões mais gerais sobre a não tradução, a retradução, a equivalência e a criatividade tradutórias, questões reveladoras da maneira como o Canadá inglês conhecia, desconhecia ou ignorava não apenas a sociedade e a cultura quebequenses da época, mas as zonas de contato linguísticas inerentes a sua própria língua. Sendo assim, constata-se certa evolução das práticas tradutórias do joual na direção da construção de imagens voluntariamente "intranquilas" tanto da Revolução dita tranquila quanto da identidade quebequense contemporânea.
