Abstract
Welcome to 2008 and what will be a very exciting year in the world of wound care. In early June, the 3rd Congress of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS) takes place in Toronto, Canada. This congress aims to be the biggest and the best, with around 5000 delegates, 200 exhibitors, 250 faculty, over 800 posters and a truly international perspective. The congress has the support of many worldwide associations, industry and publishers. It is truly a collaborative effort to ensure the best possible congress for all participants At the time of publication of this edition of the IWJ, the abstract deadline will have passed – so hopefully you did not miss out. Registrations are increasing fast, and because the venue space limits the attendance at approximately 5000, the event could sell out – a first in the field of wounds. This year will also see the fifth anniversary of the International Wound Journal (IWJ). To help celebrate our fifth year and also the 3rd Congress of the WUWHS, both organisations will collaborate on a number of exciting events. The IWJ will host a symposium targeted at those wishing to be able to communicate their clinical and research findings in a more effective way. Look out for a special IWJ supplement that will be distributed at this satellite conference bringing you the top ten accessed articles online through Blackwell Synergy, which we have published since our launch. We will also work with the World Union and its partner organisations to have a commemorative edition of the IWJ specifically focused on the subject matter of the congress. This will be a listed edition of the Journal, with all articles having gone through the peer-review process. The edition will be published in May just prior to the congress. The commemorative edition will be exciting and different, with many interesting articles, which will provide background information for many of the sessions at the congress. The excitement, activity and stress, for those of us on the organising committee, are building and I am sure that you have seen the dermatologist with a red hat (Dr Gary Sibbald – Conference Chair) on numerous occasions and in many countries. If you are unaware of this congress, then we have failed to do our job as an organising committee. The philosophy of our congress is all inclusive and international. If the abstract submissions are an indication of the likely delegate profile, then we will achieve our objective as we are on target to receive over 1000 submissions. The Toronto Congress Committee has not achieved this in isolation. We have had significant help from our partnering organisations and also from others, although they have their own congresses in North America during 2008. North America has embraced the challenge of holding an International Congress on its home soil, benefiting the world of wound care on an international basis. A model has been established to help other countries, societies and individuals to bid to host the 4th Congress of the WUWHS in 2012.
