Les consommations d’alcool et de tabac diminuent en France et se rapprochent de celles des autres pays européens. Les hommes sont plus gros consommateurs d’alcool et de tabac que les femmes, mais les écarts diminuent et pour le tabac, les femmes sont près de rejoindre leur compagnons! Pour les deux sexes, la consommation quotidienne d’alcool augmente régulièrement avec l’âge alors que la consommation hebdomadaire, comme l’ivresse, est l’apanage des jeunes; la consommation de tabac diminue régulièrement après 40 ans. Parmi les personnes ayant fumé, plus d’une sur trois s’est arrêtée; les personnes s’étant arrêtées de boire sont beaucoup moins nombreuses, de l’ordre de une sur cinquante. Pour tous les âges et pour les deux sexes, la consommation d’alcool a diminué depuis une vingtaine d’années; la consommation de tabac n’a diminué que pour les hommes, elle est restée stable pour les femmes. Le tabagisme augmente lorsque le niveau socio-économique diminue; pour la consommation d’alcool, les variations sont moins claires et brouillées par la difficulté de distinguer la consommation modérée de la consommation excessive. La connaissance du public en ce qui concerne la dangerosité de ces deux substances est bien connue, mais pas toujours les doses excessives, or le niveau de la consommation déclarée est lié à celui du niveau jugé excessif.
