Abstract
To promote tissue healing, insertion of MPC require the external part of the catheter to be buried under the skin for ± 2 weeks. No flushing is required after insertion of MPC, which allows same day discharge of the patient. To save hospital costs, we attempted to “bury” subcutaneous part of TC by adopting the MPC technique with no flushing. PD was started by exteriorization of the subcutaneous part of the catheter when patients needed dialysis. We analyzed the outcome of immediate function of buried TC for outflow obstructions within ≤3 months after exteriorization and compared the results with MPC insertions in our center. Also, we used results of regular TC catheter insertions (which requires flushing and hospitalization in our center) as another control. We find that 1) early complications due to outflow obstruction requiring manipulations or surgery were mostly noted in buried TC group than MPC group (Table). 2) The increased complications in buried TC group was probably due to advanced uraemia affecting tissue healing, as 42% of these patients required haemodialysis support prior initiation of PD (similar to 48% of advanced uraemics requiring hemodialysis in the TCgroup(Table), and earlier exteriorization (av.46days) compared to the MPC group (av.88 days) (Table).Table
