Purpose: Haemodynamic function during pain is not well understood. The aim of this review was to evaluate the literature of cardiovascular function during pain, specifically the haemodynamics underlying pain in healthy adults and in adults with ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Inclusion criteria: Studies were included that measured haemodynamics during pain in healthy adults and in adults with IHD. Pain was defined as the subjective response to noxious stimuli, such as the cold pressor test or induced coronary artery occlusion. Haemodynamic response was defined as changes in heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), cardiac output (CO), stroke volume (SV), and/or systemic vascular resistance (SVR). Methods: Electronic searches were conducted of The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and CINAHL databases. The search was limited to the past twenty years (1988–2008) and studies in English using the terms haemo-dynamic parameters, BP, HR, SVR, ischaemic cascade, neurochemical cascade, pain, BP and pain, acute myocardial infarction, cardiac nociception, impedance cardiography, thoracic impedance, and ambulatory impedance cardiography. Published studies, abstracts, relevant journals, and reference lists of retrieved articles were reviewed. Dissertations and conference proceedings were not reviewed.
