Abstract
This collection of twelve essays grew out of a 2005 conference of the same name held at the University of Western Ontario, where the editor holds a faculty position in the Department of Anthropology. The contributors range from senior scholars such as Edmund Danziger Jr., Ute Lischke, David T. McNab, and Lisa Philips to junior faculty, two graduate students (at the time), a Parks Canada historian, and an archivist for the diocese of Algoma in Canada. Two contributors are from institutions in the United States, and the rest are from Canada. Regardless of author, each chapter focuses primarily on the Anishinabeg (earlier called Ojibwa, or Chippewa) and métis groups around the Great Lakes. To a lesser degree other Algonquian, Iroquoian, and Siouxian peoples also receive attention. To accommodate the range of Native groups and issues the contributors examine, the editor defines the region broadly. For him it stretches from Minnesota east to New York and Pennsylvania, and from Ontario south to the Ohio Valley.
