Une enquête réalisée en 1998-1999 auprès de quatre groupes d’immigrants récents au Québec (Chine, Maghreb, Moyen-Orient et Haïti) a visé à décrire leur état de santé et leurs pratiques de recours aux services de santé. Il s’agissait notamment de lier conditions et habitudes de vie, problèmes sociaux et états de santé physique et mentale, consommation de services de santé. Ces migrants sont plus jeunes que la population générale québécoise: ils représentent 55 % de la vague migratoire arrivée entre 1986 et 1992. Cette population présente globalement un meilleur état de santé que la population québécoise, ce qui s’explique largement par les critères de sélection pratiqués à l’entrée. Certains problèmes de santé sont spécifiques à quelques groupes, tels que l’anémie chez les Haïtiens et les allergies chez les Chinois. Même la santé dentaire paraît meilleure pour l’ensemble de ces populations que pour les Québécois pris globalement, tout comme la santé mentale. Aussi, les migrants récents recourent moins aux divers services de santé, soit par méconnaissance, soit pour des raisons culturelles. Leurs habitudes de vie et leurs comportements sont toutefois plus favorables à la santé que ceux des Québécois. Cette enquête a conduit à préconiser des interventions mieux ciblées en fonction des communautés culturelles et à améliorer leur connaissance et leur accès aux services de santé.
