Abstract
partir de la fin de l'anne 1789, l'occasion des dbats de porte internationale prsents l'Assemble, la plupart des Constituants rejettent les pratiques et les conceptions diplomatiques de l'Ancien Rgime, sans ncessairement concrtiser tous leurs engagements. Comme dans l'ordre politique, les dputs adoptent un discours de rupture qui cache mal la ncessaire transaction entre l'hritage et la nouveaut ; au-del d'invitables divisions entre patriotes, qui portent notamment sur la nature de la socit des nations , l'Assemble dnonce les guerres entreprises dans l'intention de faire des conqutes, proclame le droit des peuples disposer de leur sort et rejette les traits et les pratiques traditionnelles de la ngociation diplomatique. Comme bientt certains caractres de la guerre rvolutionnaire, ces volutions s'inscrivent dans un processus historique que les contemporains n'ont pas toujours peru ; dans le domaine de l'histoire des relations internationales, c'est peut-tre ce lien avec le pass qui a le plus nourri et enrichi les rflexions de ces dernires annes.
