Cet article compare les estimations de la consommation unitaire de chauffage dans le secteur résidentiel pour plusieurs régions canadiennes, y compris le Québec. L’étude repose sur l’analyse de plusieurs sondages effectués par Hydro-Québec et Ressources Naturelles Canada. La méthode utilisée est l’analyse conditionnelle de la demande (ACD). Cette comparaison des consommations unitaires permet d’abord de déduire que le Québec consomme moins d’énergie finale par ménage pour le chauffage des locaux que le reste du Canada. Cette situation est d’abord liée au fait que la diffusion du chauffage électrique est plus importante au Québec qu’ailleurs. Mais la conversion en terme d’énergie utile semble également démontrer que le Québec consomme moins d’énergie par ménage qu’ailleurs au Canada. Cette situation différente entre le Québec et le reste du Canada nous permet d’explorer quelques pistes qui aideraient au respect du protocole de Kyoto dans le secteur résidentiel au Canada. Parmi ces mesures qui permettent de réduire les gaz à effet de serre dans le secteur résidentiel, la baisse de la température de chauffage et une augmentation de l’efficacité au niveau des brûleurs arrivent en tête de liste.
