Abstract
Vários territórios rurais se fragilizaram a partir de sua inserção na economia agroalimentar moderna,como foi o caso de numerosas regiões periféricas no Canadá, a exemplo da parte sul da região Chaudière-Appalaches no Quebec, objeto do presente artigo. Seu objetivo foi o de relatar uma experiênciaali desenvolvida de planejamento rural baseado sobre a abordagem de diagnóstico territorial. A abordagemque foi aplicada, tanto de dignóstico como de estratégia de desenvolvimento rural, deriva de umatentativa de aplicação da teoria do desenvolvimento sustentável, tornando-a então uma metodologiaoperacional de desenvolvimento rural sustentável. A questão é de saber a constituição de uma novadinâmica de desenvolvimento, apoiada por políticas públicas e por estratégias de ação que respeitemas limitações econômicas atuais , mas, ao mesmo tempo, valorizem as potencialidades agroecológicasdesses territórios e integrem as expectativas e vontades das populações envolvidas. Ou seja, trata-se daquestão da aceitabilidade social das práticas agrícolas diante de limitações ou oportunidades econômicas.Uma tal harmonização entre uma economia, um meio-ambiente e uma sociedade constitui uma condiçãonecessária para o surgimento de condições para o desenvolvimento rural sustentável. Foi o que se tentoudemonstrar com esse estudo de caso que permitiu propor generalizações importantes.
