Au Canada, environ 30 000 tonnes de sous-produits issus de la pêche du crabe des neiges (Chionoecetes opilio) sont générées annuellement et actuellement jetées aux ordures. Ces sous-produits contiennent des biopolymères, tels que des extraits peptidiques, et certains sont connus pour interagir avec des surfaces métalliques ainsi que pour avoir une activité antibactérienne. Ces propriétés laissent à penser que les extraits peptidiques de crabe des neiges (EPCN) pourraient être des inhibiteurs de corrosion, à la fois par adsorption sur la surface métallique et par inhibition de la corrosion induite par les microorganismes (CIM). L’inhibition de la corrosion par les EPCN a été étudiée à l’aide de mesures électrochimiques et le recouvrement des plaques par la rouille et le biofilm a été étudié par microscopie électronique à balayage. L’efficacité d’inhibition de la corrosion de l’acier doux en eau de mer par les EPCN a été démontrée sur une période de 10 jours, et une modification architecturale du biofilm a été observée durant cette même période. Cette étude montre que les EPCN pourraient agir selon deux mécanismes : l’un direct par adsorption sur le métal, et le second par la modification structurale du biofilm et donc par action sur la CIM.
