Les Muses orphelines du théâtre au cinéma : en conversation avec Robert Favreau L 'adaptation cinématographique de pièces de théâtre, bien que très courante non seulement à Hollywood mais aussi en France, en ^ Angleterre et ailleurs, demeure un phénomène assez récent au Québec comme au Canada 1 .Ce n'est que depuis une dizaine d'années qu'ont été présentées certaines adaptations comme Being at home with Claude (Jean Beaudin, 1992), Love andHuman Remains (Denys Arcand, 1993), Lilies (John Greyson, 1996), Matroni et moi (Jean-Philippe Duval, 1999), liste à laquelle on peut ajouter les films de Robert Lepage.L'an dernier, Robert Favreau réalisait Les Muses orphelines (2000) basée sur la pièce de Michel Marc Bouchard.Nous lui avons demandé de nous parler du processus d'adaptation et du contexte dans lequel cette pratique évolue.Mais tout d'abord, pourquoi selon lui y a-t-il si peu de liens entre le théâtre et le cinéma au Québec ?Robert Favreau : Il est vrai que nous sommes une des rares cultures à avoir fait si peu d'adaptations.Je pense que cela s'explique en partie par la jeunesse de notre cinéma -quarante ans c'est quand même très jeune pour une cinématographie et je
