Dans la littérature, peu d’études portent sur le développement de la compétence en soins critiques. Reconnaissant que la pratique infirmière se veut différente dans ces unités de soins et que l’effectif infirmier se voit de moins en moins expérimenté, cette étude a pour objectif de décrire les facteurs facilitant et contraignant le développement de la compétence des infirmières qui œuvrent en soins critiques. L’entrevue semi-dirigée basée sur un cadre de référence inspiré des savoirs de Chinn et Kramer (2008) a été utilisée pour recueillir des données auprès de 10 infirmières, catégorisées selon les stades de compétence de Benner (1995). Ainsi, les résultats ont démontré que 27 facteurs regroupés selon une perspective individuelle, contextuelle et organisationnelle facilitent ou contraignent le développement de la compétence des infirmières aux soins intensifs. Bien que quelques facteurs aient préalablement été recensés dans la littérature, plusieurs facteurs décrits dans l’étude actuelle ont été explicités pour une première fois. Finalement, des recommandations pour la formation, la recherche et la pratique infirmière sont exposées.
