Bilayer growth in the initial stages of Mg epitaxy on Mo(001)
Bibliographic record
Abstract
We have studied the epitaxial growth of ultrathin Mg films onto Mo(001) at substrate temperatures ranging from 300 to 450 K using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy. Mg grows in a Stranski-Krastanov mode. The three-dimensional (3D) transition, which is known to occur following the deposition of four atomic layers, can be seen in LEED since the 2D film and the 3D islands exhibit different crystallography. We have measured the intensity of the ${\mathrm{Mo}}_{\mathrm{MNN}}(190\mathrm{eV})$ Auger transition as a function of deposition time. Initially the signal decreases linearly with exposure. At 40% of the initial intensity a distinct break is observed. LEED indicates the break is not associated with the transition to 3D growth. The break occurs following two-layer equivalent coverage. Using a least squares fit, the break is consistent with the development of an atomic bilayer and subsequent layer-by-layer growth of the third and fourth atomic layers. Growth of the bilayer is attributed to a combination of a low diffusion constant for Mg on Mo(001), and the presence of an energy barrier to interlayer transport in the Mg film.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
