Does Peer Review Process Exist in Developing-Country Journals?: The Bangladesh Experience

Abstract
This study explores the effectiveness of the peer review process for scientific journals published in Bangladesh, based on 1997 interviews with forty-three Bangladeshi authors. Problems relating to peer review as cited by the authors include omissions, harsh comments, and unnecessary changes. Authors' suggestions to improve peer review include mandatory peer review, creating a panel of peers for each journal, and motivation, recognition, and incentive for peers. Almost all authors recognized the need and effectiveness of peer review in journal publication. It is concluded that Bangladeshi journals should implement a strict peer review process. The quality of peer review needs to be improved, and reviewing time shortened.
