Abstract
Ces trente dernières années se sont développées des modalités de pratique sportive misant sur un engagement corporel singulier que la littérature scientifique a largement analysées. Pour autant, s’interrogeant à la fois sur les motifs d’engagement et de maintien dans ces activités, elle délaisse aujourd’hui l’analyse de ce qui peut amener à décider de s’en désengager. En effet, la pratique engagée ne se poursuit pas nécessairement toute la vie. Cette contribution vise à éclairer ce moment de désengagement. L’analyse des récits récoltés met en évidence que les raisons invoquées par ces sportifs pour réduire ou stopper la pratique engagée renvoient à une grande variété d’éléments explicatifs s’entremêlant dans le choix de revenir à une vie « normale » ou « ordinaire ». De la nécessité à la possibilité de stopper son activité, en passant par la volonté de le faire, se désengager est donc un choix pluriel et complexe permettant qui plus est de mieux comprendre les traits communs de leur engagement.
