L'évolution de la formation des artistes québécois au xxe siècle

Abstract
La formation professionnelle des artistes s'est profondément transformée au cours du XXe siècle, le changement le plus marquant étant le passage généralisé des modes de formation traditionnels, autodidaxie et apprentissage, au mode contemporain caractérisé par la formation dans des établissements spécialisés qui décernent des diplômes. Cette transformation s'est opérée dans le cadre plus vaste de l'institutionnalisation des pratiques artistiques, qui s'est manifestée notamment par la création de lieux de création et de diffusion, d'établissements spécialisés dans la formation d'artistes a suivi et non pas précédé l'apparition des lieux de création et de diffusion. À partir d'informations recueillies auprès d'un échantillon de 1 471 artistes membres de 11 associations professionnelles différentes, nous montrons que cette séquence a eu pour premier effet de réduire la formation artistique. On est ainsi passé d'une période où les artistes, peu nombreux, entreprenaient leur carrière après avoir reçu une formation artistique à une période où, la demande de travail croissant plus vite que l'offre de formation, les artistes ont entrepris leur carrière sans nécessairement avoir reçu de formation. Le niveau de formation moyen qui existait au début du siècle n'a été atteint à nouveau qu'après la création d'établissements voués à la formation professionnelle des artistes.
