En 1950, les méthodes de travail dans l'industrie de la coupe du bois dans le Nord de l'Ontario ressemblaient fort à ce qui s'était pratiqué un siècle auparavant. Si les scieries et les usines de pâte à papier s'étaient grandement modernisées, le travail en forêt — abattre l'arbre, le couper et le sortir de la forêt — pour sa part, était encore effectué de la même façon qu'au siècle précédent. L'abondance de la main-d'oeuvre et les faibles coûts d'exploitation ne justifiaient nullement, d'ailleurs, un besoin de changement dans ce domaine. Dans les décennies 1950 et I960, toutefois, les changements dans les techniques s'y multiplièrent rapidement et transformèrent considérablement le travail des bûcherons. L'auteur examine ici le processus et l'impact de la mécanisation de même que les réactions des travailleurs à ces diverses améliorations. Il appert, de fait, que tout au long de cette période de grandes transformations, les bûcherons n'ont pas seulement été affectés par les décisions stratégiques prises par la direction des compagnies d'exploitation mais qu'ils ont joué une part active, bien que souvent inconsciente, dans la mise en place de nouvelles techniques.
