La participation sociale des Canadiens a significativement chuté entre 1992 et 2005. L’approche des parcours de vie peut nous permettre d’avoir une meilleure compréhension de ce changement, et ainsi éclairer les décideurs dans la création et la mise en place de politiques qui encourageraient la participation des individus au sein de leur collectivité. Jusqu’à maintenant, on a peu intégré la dimension collective à la conception de telles politiques et aux analyses longitudinales déjà faites au Canada. Dans cet article, nous proposons un indicateur qui permet d’intégrer à l’approche des parcours de vie cette dimension qu’est le rapport des individus à la collectivité, sans négliger l’analyse centrée sur les individus. Nous utilisons ainsi le concept de participation sociale, défini comme un don de temps à des individus ou à une organisation, afin d’analyser la contribution à la fois formelle (bénévolat) et informelle (entraide) des individus. Pour ce faire, nous avons recours aux données de l’Enquête sociale générale (ESG) sur l’emploi du temps de 1992, de 1998 et de 2005, de Statistique Canada, afin de comprendre l’évolution des pratiques de participation sociale pendant les différentes périodes de la vie des Canadiens.
