Abstract
Humanities Editor’s Note: Professor Kamal’s poem, “A prodigal night,” appears here exactly as it was received from the author, who assured me, “As for the poem, I am the sole author. The idea of this poem was in my head for more then one year, if only I could write in my words. It took me three weeks [in June, 2001] to write that poem.” I have edited Kamal’s personal history for focus and length but have kept his wording. No “[sic]” has been added after an error: it is Kamal’s success, rather than any remaining imperfection, that deserves our attention. Instead, brackets enclose editorial comments, or material excerpted from the original that no longer preserves the original style. Mistakes do appear in the text. They mark the way he has traveled. For that reason, I have left them. Personal History [received March 8, 2002]: My colleagues know me as Kamal . . . My stroke occurred on April 4, 2000, at home at about 9:45 pm. I had done my twice week exercise at 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm with the Cardiac Athletic Society of Edmonton - every one had a kind of cardiac disorder - then I took my dinner at about 8:00 pm. I was tired and I must have fallen asleep. When I woke up, the picture on TV seemed to be wrong - the face of a character was bloated on my left side. I phoned my son and I told me “some thing is wrong with me.” My son asked me “can you tell me how you feel?” and very quickly I made no sense.
