Sci‐PM Sat ‐ 05: Differential absorption of radiochromic plastic dosimeter: Presage™

Abstract
Radiochromic plastics are a physically robust alternative to radiation sensitive hydrogels such as the polymerization gels (BANG®, PAG) and ferrous xylenol orange gels for 3D dosimetry. Plastics simplify optical computed tomography (CT) scanning by eliminating reflections and refraction at the optical interfaces associated with sample vessels. Presage™ is a patented radiochromic plastic based on the radiation‐induced conversion of the colourless dye precursor, luecomalachite green, into malachite green within a transparent solid, polyurethane. Since Presage™ is transparent, it is optimal for readout with fast broad beam (cone beam) optical CT scanners where scattering materials degrade quantitative transmission measurements. Differential absorption with multiple wavelengths can simplify optical CT scanning by eliminating pre‐irradiation scans. Fractionated irradiation of Presage™, to a maximum dose of 10 Gy, in 1 cm cuvettes demonstrates a linear response. Absorption spectrum recorded at 0 and 6 Gy demonstrate that optical CT scanning near 630 nm with reference scans near 520 nm or 700 nm are optimum for maximizing dynamic range. In the particular case of laser CT with He‐Ne lasers 633 and 543 nm provide the optimum scan wavelengths. Statement: J.
