Les populations des archipels du Pacifique se referant a la souverainete francaise sont quotidiennement confrontees a la gestion de la diversite culturelle, particulierement dans les deux agglomerations « polarisantes » de Noumea et de Papeete, ainsi qu’a la dialectique « tradition/modernite », tout specialement dans les espaces insulaires peripheriques (iles Loyaute, Wallis et Futuna, Australes, Marquises...). Par suite de trajectoires historiques differentes, la Nouvelle-Caledonie et la Polynesie francaise presentent des situations contrastees. Dans le premier cas, une societe agraire multi-seculaire (kanak) tente de cohabiter depuis un siecle et demi avec un peuplement de colonisation (caldoche) cosmopolite, a dominante urbaine, economiquement puissant, aux origines et metissages extremement varies ; comme les metis restent souvent exclus des tribus kanak, une situation de « face a face » perdure. Dans le second cas, les metis ont su tirer de leur double ancrage ethno-culturel des elements de reussite economique sociale et sont par ce fait meme, a present, tout a la fois inclus dans la francite (d’essence coloniale) et dans l’autochtonie (polynesienne). En trouvant avantage a se dire « polynesienne » tout en acceptant les manifestations traditionnelles chinoises et celles plus officielles liees a la presence de la France, la population de Tahiti demontre qu’il est infiniment plus profitable de gerer une multiplicite de references culturelles qu’une situation duale ; la population de Caledonie doit evidemment s’en inspirer si elle souhaite trouver un equilibre dans la duree.
