RésuméSoixante-quinze marques de gomme à mâcher ont été sélectionnées pour une expérience visant à déterminer la réponse de quatre appareils de détection d’alcool à l’haleine d’une personne mâchant de telles gommes contenant des polyalcools. Selon le protocole utilisé, 300 résultats ont été obtenus dont 298 d’entre eux ont donné un résultat nul malgré qu’un souffle était délivré alors que le sujet mâchait de la gomme en même temps. Les deux seuls résultats positifs l’ont été avec la même marque, soit Trident Splash, fraise avec kiwi, qui a donné à la fois une réponse faible (<10 mg / 100 mL) et brève (<1 minute) sur les modèles Alco-Sensor® IV DWF et Alcotest® 7410 GLC. Une analyse par chromatographie en phase gazeuse a montré que de l’éthanol à environ 0,05% (p/p) était présent dans cette saveur. Associé au fait qu’un individu ne doit avoir aucune substance dans la bouche lorsqu’il est appelé à souffler dans de tels appareils, ces résultats réfutent toute suggestion à l’effet que ces gommes contenant des polyalcools ont la capacité de produire un résultat positif sur les appareils de mesure de l’alcool dans l’haleine utilisés dans le cadre des interventions des agents de la paix.
