This book, one of a dozen items comprising new titles or new editions published by the American Phytopathological Society Press in 2009, represents a departure in style from the well-known Compendium series. Its hardback format, encompassing 281 pages and supported by lavish, superb colour photographs (over 900), describes diseases of more than 150 popular herbaceous perennials organized alphabetically by genus, from Acanthus to Zantedeschia. Introductory chapters are provided on diagnosis and managing fungal diseases (leaf spots, rusts, smuts and mildews; root rots and wilts) and problems caused by oomycetes, bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses and nematodes. Additionally, the authors provide an excellent glossary and a detailed 21 page index together with a common – Latin name directory for plants. The authors, all extension plant pathologists currently or formerly linked to major US universities, focus, of course, on North American situations. However, European readers and others elsewhere will appreciate this book. Integrated Pest Management is encouraged for all end-users; commercial nurseries, retail garden centres, public parks and gardens, and private enthusiasts. In the genus Chrysanthemum, for example, two contagious rusts are mentioned among a dozen other diseases. On the garden chrysanthemum (syn. Dendranthema x grandiflorum) brown rust (Puccinia chrysanthemi) is endemic, whereas, white rust (P. horiana) remains a notifiable disease in the US and Canada. The book carries more than 30 illustrations of other rusts troublesome on herbaceous perennials. Some are recent introductions to North America and illustrate the problems from pests and diseases that are faced by the ornamental plant trade, which today is a global industry. The preface comments on how the book will assist diagnosis and provide ‘common sense’ advice on how to reduce the incidence of pathogens on this group of ornamentals. I agree and recommend purchase by individuals, horticultural businesses and institutions. The latter might also consider purchasing an accompanying CD of the book’s images for teaching purposes.
