THE EFFECT OF UNILATERAL RESISTANCE TRAINING ON ARTERIAL COMPLIANCE IN ELDERLY MEN

Abstract
PURPOSE An increasing proportion of the western population is over the age of 65. This increase in age coincides with a decrease in arterial compliance. A lower arterial compliance is related to a higher risk for cardiovascular accidents. Several studies have found that endurance training increases the arterial compliance and thereby reducing the risk for cardiovascular accidents. At this moment no information is available about the effect of resistance training on arterial compliance in elderly men. METHODS We determined the role of 10 weeks of unilateral resistance training of the arm and leg on brachial and femoral artery compliance, representative of peripheral arteries, and carotid artery compliance, representative of a central artery, of 12 healthy, elderly men (mean ± SEM age, 71 ± 6.6). We compared the resting arterial compliance of the elderly men pre-, after 4 weeks, and after 10 weeks of resistance training by using simultaneously measurement of arterial diameters (B-mode ultrasound) and blood pressure (Finapres). RESULTS After the resistance exercise intervention the isometric arm strength increased 35% and the isometric leg strength increased 13.2%. There were no significant differences in either central or peripheral arterial compliance or stiffness index after 10 weeks of training. Resting heart rate decreased 20% (p < 0.05) and plasma glucose decreased from 6.0 ± 0.86 to 5.1 ± 0.89 mmol/l (mean ± SEM) (p < 0.05). Carotid artery peak blood flow at rest increased 23.5 ± after 10 weeks of resistance training (p < 0.05). There were no significant changes in arterial blood pressure. CONCLUSION Ten weeks of unilateral resistance training does not alter the peripheral and central arterial compliance or stiffness index in healthy, elderly men.
