Abstract
Résumé Dans son ouvrage de référence sur The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy , David Cannadine soutient la thèse du déclin continu de l’aristocratie en Grande-Bretagne à partir de 1832, et surtout après 1911. Mon hypothèse est que l’aristocratie britannique continue d’exercer un pouvoir politique important, qui se manifeste dans un certain nombre de mouvements politiques des années d’entre-deux-guerres. L’influence politique de l’aristocratie n’est pas limitée aux seuls mouvements politiques marginaux, notamment les mouvements fascisants, comme l’English Mistery. C’est ainsi que, au début de la seconde guerre mondiale, Lord Halifax, pair héréditaire, échoue de peu à devenir Premier ministre, laissant la place à Winston Churchill, lui-même appartenant à l’une des familles les plus anciennes et les plus aristocratiques du royaume. Jusqu’au début des années 1960, de nombreuses personnalités politiques britanniques appartiennent à l’aristocratie. Le déclin du rôle de l’aristocratie britannique dans la vie politique que l’on constate depuis le vote de la loi de 1911 sur le Parlement ne doit pas être surestimé.
