Abstract
L EST DES OPPOSITIONS qui ont fait flors tant chez les lettrs que dans les savoirs populaires, entre l'Occident et l'Orient, l'Europe et l'Asie ou l'Afrique, l'Ouest et l'Est ou le Reste , le Nord et le Sud (pour ne plus dire le Tiers-Monde). Or tout ce que l'on sait aujourd'hui, grce aux archologues, aux historiens et depuis peu aux anthropologues, interdit de croire l'existence dans le pass de tels ensembles culturels censs avoir camp face face sans s'tre jamais mlangs, la faon des les d'un archipel. Non seulement la frontire entre l'Occident et le reste du monde s'est continuellement dplace mais les reprsentations et les discours sur ce que ces appellations recouvraient ont profondment vari d'un pays l'autre, d'une socit l'autre, en fonction des appartenances rgionales ou nationales, sociales et culturelles, au gr des points de vue adopts 1 .
