Non seulement la frontire entre l'Occident et le reste du monde s'est continuellement dplace mais les reprsentations et les discours sur ce que ces appellations recouvraient ont profondment vari d'un pays l'autre, d'une socit l'autre, en fonction des appartenances rgionales ou nationales, sociales et culturelles, au gr des points de vue adopts 1 .
