La Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) ha sido seleccionada para participar en el concurso internacional denominado Solar Decathlon 2005, junto con otras 18 universidades de Estados Unidos, Canada y Puerto Rico. La competicion se inicio oficialmente en septiembre de 2003 y finalizara a comienzos de octubre de 2005. Esta iniciativa, impulsada por el Departamento de Energia de los Estados Unidos, tiene como objetivo difundir la posibilidad de conciliar las buenas practicas arquitectonicas con el uso racional de la energia a traves del aprovechamiento pasivo y activo de la energia solar y el empleo de tecnologias eficientes (puede encontrarse mas informacion en la pagina web oficial del concurso http://www.solardecathlon.org, la propuesta de nuestro equipo aparece detallada en http://www.solardecathlon.upm.es). La propuesta consiste en el diseno, la construccion y la demostracion de una vivienda unifamiliar de unos 70 m 2 . La participacion de la UPM representa una experiencia multidisciplinar unica de caracter investigador y educativo. Profesores y alumnos de distintas ramas colaboran estrechamente en una apuesta de futuro encaminada a alcanzar la sostenibilidad, nacida de la alianza entre la arquitectura bioclimatica, las tecnologias de aprovechamiento solar y la domotica. La denominacion Decathlon (decatlon) emana de las caracteristicas de la competicion, compuesta por diez pruebas en las que los estudiantes de las universidades participantes (o decatletas ) deben demostrar la viabilidad de sus proyectos a profesionales de los ambitos de la arquitectura, la ingenieria, los medios de comunicacion y el publico en general.
