Convenient Truths: History, Memory, and Identity in Brantford, Ontario
Bibliographic record
Abstract
In If This Is Your Land, Where Are Your Stories?: Finding Common Ground , J. Edward Chamberlin devotes considerable attention to the ways in which human beings generate meaning through stories. This article explores two important local sites—the monument to city founder Joseph Brant, and the monument commemorating Alexander Graham Bell and the invention of the telephone—in order to understand how they reinforce the dominant self-image of Brantford elites, summed up in the city’s erstwhile motto, “Industry and Perseverance.” Using the theoretical frame of lieux de memoire developed by the French historian, Pierre Nora, the sites are examined as spaces to which memory adheres. The ways in which the monuments themselves and the ceremonies to inaugurate them were used to reinforce a desired image of the city are laid out as are the competing forces (be they internal or external) seeking to contest the dominant image. The result is that the complexity and fluidity of memory are revealed. Abstract: Dans son livre intitule If This Is Your Land, Where Are Your Stories?

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
