Abstract
The SuperCritical Water-cooled nuclear Reactor (SCWR) is one of 6 Generation-IV concepts currently under development worldwide. The SCWR will operate with light-water coolant at pressures of up to 25 MPa with inlet/outlet temperatures of approximately 350℃ and 625℃. At these conditions, SCWRs can be integrated with thermochemical hydrogen-co-generation facilities, primarily based on the Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle. The maximum Cu-Cl cycle temperature requirement of 530°C is bounded by the SCWR's thermal output and could be supplied through an intermediate Heat eXchanger (HX) located downstream of the SCWR outlet. This paper presents thermal analysis of selected scenarios involving double-pipe, counter-flow HXs located at two locations along the primary-coolant loop of a single-reheat-cycle SCW Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Depending on the HX location, SCW or SuperHeated Steam (SHS) from the reactor would flow through the inner pipe and steam for the hydrogen co-generation would flow through an annulus gap. Thermal energy from the SCWR coolant would be delivered to support the hydrolysis and oxygen-production reactions in the Cu-Cl cycle. The paper presents analysis with a combination of numerical solutions and the log-mean temperature difference method to calculate HX heat-transfer characteristics, and HX physical dimensions. Results are presented in support of a link between these two facilities, i.e., SCWR and hydrogen plant, to support hydrogen production.
