Abstract

--ABSTRACT: Variable retenti on commercial thinning (VRCT), by combining artificial gaps with variable density thinning, is an alternative to traditional commercial thinning that could increase diversity and abundance of the understory in young even-aged stands. The effects of VRCT have been studied in young stands of two contrasting origins (naturally regenerated forest and plantation) and two ecological types, the combination of which forms four site types. The first chapter's objective was to document the functional traits, composition and diversity of the understory of those four site types, in stands that are ready for commercial thinning. To accomplish this objective, five replicates of each site type were sampled with transects. On these sites, origin can explain many functional and compositional differences that were observed while ecological type mainly affects diversity. Ruderal species show a higher relative abundance in plantations while sorne stress-tolerant species show a higher relative abundance in naturally regenerated forests.
\nThe second chapter's objective was to document the short term response of the understory to different VRCT treatments. To do so, one experimental site for each site type, containing replicates for each of the 12 commercial thinning treatment studied, was sampled before and after treatment. Here, we document that only the treatments including gaps showed significant changes in the understory after two years. On aIl four experimental sites, those treatments lead to an increase in the relative abundance of ruderal species, a decrease in the relative abundance of sorne stress-tolerant species and an increase in diversity as measured by Simpson's Index and RAO's Index. In the end, it seems as if diversity could be increased by intermediate disturbances such as low-intensity site preparation in plantations or gapadded commercial thinning. However, sorne stress-tolerant species are sensitive to those disturbances and this could lead to a decline in diversity at a larger scale if those disturbances were applied to the entire territory.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
