Working after Childbirth: A Lifecourse Transition Analysis of Canadian Women from the 1970s to the 2000s

Abstract
Dans cet article, nous étudions l'entrée sur le marché du travail de mères qui ont eu leur premier enfant entre 1970 et 1999. Nous utilisons les données rétrospectives de l'Enquête sociale générale sur l'histoire familiale du cycle 15 (2001) afin d'analyser l'influence des caractéristiques socioéconomiques des femmes qui se retirent du marché de l'emploi après avoir donné naissance. Nous analysons cette transition selon l'approche des parcours de vie. Notre analyse intercohorte permet de différencier cette transition selon le niveau d'éducation, le revenu, etc. On y remarque que depuis le milieu des années 1980, les mères avec un faible niveau d'éducation sont exclues du marché de l'emploi durant les deux années suivant la naissance de leur premier enfant. In this paper we compare cohorts of mothers who had their first children between 1970 and 1999, in terms of their probability of beginning work shortly after childbearing. Using the 2001 General Social Survey, Cycle 15 on Family History, we investigate the effects of women's socioeconomic characteristics on labor force withdrawal. Our discussion focuses on the analysis of the transition as a type of life course analysis. We underline the differentiation of the transition by cohorts, educational attainment, income, et cetera. We show that since the mid-1980s, mothers with low educational attainment are dramatically excluded from the labor market within the two years following the birth of their first child.
