Ce court texte relate les expériences récentes du Québec en matière de santé publique et de promotion de la santé, partant de l'adoption de la Politique de santé et de bien-être en 1992, jusqu'à la mise en œuvre du Programme national de santé publique en 2003, en passant par la création de l'Institut national de santé publique en 1998. A travers ces grands jalons, l'article expose aussi le développement des capacités de recherche en lien avec les perspectives de santé publique et de promotion de la santé au Québec, de même que les enseignements tirés de chacune de ces étapes et réalisations successives. Il esquisse enfin un portrait de l'évolution actuelle du Québec à ce chapitre, et suggère quelques mécanismes susceptibles de structurer le développement des capacités de recherche en santé publique et en promotion de la santé au cours des années à venir.
