Pour naître, se répandre et jouer un rôle dans le devenir de nos sociétés, la connaissance historique requiert la médiation de l'historien-écrivain. Elle n'est accessible qu'à la suite d'une transaction fondamentale entre le document et l'artisan de la mémoire qui s'évertue à donner un sens aux liasses de textes jaunis, aux paroles archaïques et aux artefacts des temps révolus.Cette médiation obligée, admise aujourd'hui par tous, prête le flanc à certaines interprétations excessives.Certains « narrativistes » radicaux ont soutenu que le récit historique n'était au fond qu'une pure fiction.Dans un contexte où les grandes lois de l'Histoire auraient éclaté les unes après les autres -Ricœur parle de l'éclatement du modèle « nomologique » -l'historien serait désormais le seul maître de son récit 2 .D'autres, inspirés par la vague postmoderniste, renoncent à l'idée même de restituer certaines intentionnalités aux femmes et aux hommes du passé.Incapable de rendre compte de quelque vérité, qu'elle soit d'ordre philosophique ou historique, l'écriture des historiens ne serait que les reconstructions purement subjectives d'imaginaires particuliers 3 .
