Cette étude avait pour objectif de comprendre ce qui pousse les enseignants et enseignantes en éducation physique du canton de Genève à s’engager, ne pas s’engager ou se désengager de la fonction de formateur et formatrice de terrain (FT). Des données empiriques recueillies par une méthodologie qualitative « indirecte » (traces accompagnant les réponses des enseignants et enseignantes sollicités pour exercer la fonction de FT) et « directe » (entretiens avec cinq enseignants et une enseignante) nous ont conduit à formuler deux théories explicatives : (1) l’engagement des enseignants et enseignantes dans la fonction de FT se produit lorsque la représentation qu’ils ont de cette fonction et des conditions de son exercice concorde avec les ressources qu’ils possèdent pour l’exercer; (2) le désengagement des enseignants et enseignantes de la fonction de FT survient lorsque l’enjeu symbolique de reconnaissance sociale qui les mobilise n’est pas atteint. Ces deux théories, discutées au regard de diverses approches sociologiques des organisations, nécessitent d’être validées à l’aide de données empiriques plus consistantes. En vertu du principe de généralisation analytique, elles peuvent néanmoins être transférées à d’autres contextes. Elles suggèrent par ailleurs quelques pistes afin d’accroître l’attractivité de la fonction de FT.
