Abstract
A Terapia Assistida com Animais (TAA) vem ganhando enfase e destaque no meio cientifico, em funcao dos resultados positivos obtidos por meio de programas que atraves da interacao homem-animal, promovem saude fisica e mental aos pacientes envolvidos. Os recursos da TAA podem ser direcionados a pessoas de diferentes faixas etarias, instituicoes, hospitais, casas de saude, escolas e clinicas de recuperacao, sendo fundamental o trabalho de uma equipe multidisciplinar. O objetivo deste trabalho e relatar as atividades desenvolvidas atraves do Projeto de Extensao Cao Cidadao UNESP, que utiliza caes da raca Labrador, para amenizar o stress, o medo e a ansiedade dos pacientes com deficiencia, assistidos no CAOE, nos momentos que antecedem o atendimento odontologico, visando facilitar a interacao do paciente com o cirurgiao dentista promovendo assim, um vinculo afetivo entre eles. As atividades sao realizadas no CAOE as quintas-feiras, desenvolvidas por uma dentista, uma tecnica de saude bucal, duas medicas veterinarias, uma psicologa, um adestrador, alunos, de ambos os cursos (Odontologia e Medicina Veterinaria) e os caes. Diante das reacoes positivas e o comportamento dos pacientes, conclui-se que, apos participarem deste projeto, eles demonstram uma melhora significativa com relacao a interacao social, aumento da auto estima e ate mesmo na comunicacao verbal, pois se soltam e conseguem interagir com as demais pessoas, alem de aceitarem com mais naturalidade o tratamento odontologico do Centrinho.
