The acceleration of protons through the interaction of a circularly polarized ultrahigh intensity laser wave incident on an overdense plasma is studied using an Eulerian Vlasov code for the numerical solution of the one-dimensional (1D) relativistic Vlasov–Maxwell set of equations. The high power laser radiation is pushing the electrons through the ponderomotive pressure, producing a sharp edge at the plasma surface. There is a build-up of the electron density at this sharp edge which creates a charge separation, giving rise to a quasistatic longitudinal electric field which is responsible for the ion acceleration.
