Abstract
This book makes an engaging contribution to Margaret Atwood studies. The most exciting and original chapter in the book is Chapter 7 entitled ‘“Survivalwoman, Survivalcreature, Womanwoman”: Atwood as Cartoonist’ which Reingard M. Nischik rightly identifies as ‘the first extended publication on Margaret Atwood's comics’ (p. 195). This chapter situates Atwood’s comics within a brief history of comics in Canada and North America and considers Atwood's references in her other works to comic art, before moving onto close readings of Atwood's Kanadian Kultchur Komix/‘Survivalwoman’ comic series and her Book Tour Comics. Nischik's readings of how nation, gender and genre interplay in Atwood's Kanadian Kultchur Komix/‘Survivalwoman’ comic series is particularly interesting. Looking at Atwood's Book Tour Comics gives an insight into Atwood's wonderfully satirical view of the commercial business of being an author. Nischik's analysis relates productively to Atwood's Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing by exploring Atwood as a comic artist on writing. Engendering Genre reproduces a number of these comics. Nischik is to be highly commended for gaining the permissions necessary to make this possible as the reproduced comics greatly enhance the chapter for the reader.
