Que faire avec l'antisémitisme du Second Testament ?Gérald Caron Atlantic School of Theology Halifax Dans son étude sur l'origine de Satan, Elaine Pagels affirme que la démonisation des ennemis, dont le but est de renforcer la distinction entre « nous » (les bons) et « eux » (les mauvais), imprègne l'ensemble de la tradition chrétienne.Tout comme cela a été fait dans les premiers siècles du christianisme, ajoute-t-elle, on n'a cessé depuis de recourir à la figure de Satan pour identifier et bien camper ses ennemis : les Juifs, les païens, les hérétiques, les athées et les non-croyants 1 .Satan est vivant.Il se porte même très bien, continuant à servir les intérêts d'institutions (et d'individus) qui l'ont, sinon créé, du moins récupéré à leur service.À en juger par l'usage qui en est fait de nos jours, la démonisation de l'AUTRE se porte en effet à merveille.Récupérée à l'échelle de la planète, elle n'est manifestement plus une affaire chrétienne.Il suffit de penser à la démonisation de Salman Rushdie suite à son livre Les versets sataniques 2 , des exégètes catholiques Raymond E. Brown et Jane Schaberg, pour leurs propos jugés en certains milieux blasphématoires à l'endroit de la Vierge Marie, ou encore des homosexuels et victimes du sida.Pensons à la toute récente guerre contre l'Irak où les belligérants se sont mutuellement accusés d'être sous l'emprise du Mal ou de Satan, ou encore à cette croissance notable de la rhétorique antijuive -où tous les clichés sont permis, incluant la démonisation -dans la plupart des pays arabes et musulmans 3 .Démoniser ses ennemis est devenu un phénomène Théologiques 11/1-2 (2003) p. 61-87
