本稿では、カナダ、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州都ヴィクトリアを事例として、街のもつアイデンティティ変遷について街のアイデンティティの核となる「花」の側面を中心に考察を行う。さらにこの事例分析を通じて、エスニシティ研究において従来看過されがちなひとつの側面について同時に指摘する。一八四○年代後半から一八六〇年代前半の英国植民地としての背景を持つヴィクトリアは、その後の移民政策や観光政策による重点化もあって、街の持つ「英国性」が街や住民を表わす特異な指標として広く認められるようになっていた。しかしながら、今日の状況を見ると、その「英国性」が同様の役割を果たしているとは考えにくい。むしろ、温暖な住みやすい環境における「ガーデン・シティ」の住民という帰属意識に、住民はさまざまな生活の局面において満足していると考えられる。「花」 は、「英国性」と「ガーデン・シティ」両者を結びうる概念なのである。「英国性」を創造するために利用されていた「花」が、今日においては住民全般の帰属意識の象徴として用いられるようになったこと、すなわち「花」の持つ象徴的意味がいかに変化したのかについて、並びに「ガーデン・シティ」としての帰属意識もエスニシティの一種であることを本稿で提示するものである。
