Le Canada: une nation américaine? Réflexion sur le continentalisme, l'identité et la mentalité canadienne., Allan Smith (traduit par S. Quelle vision du Canada retrouve-t-on chez les intellectuels canadiens depuis le début du dix-neuvième siècle? Comment ont-ils perçu le Canada face aux États-Unis? Allan Smith a consacré de nombreuses années à l'étude de ces questions et cet ouvrage rassemble quelques-uns de ses textes publiés sur une période d'une trentaine d'années. Le recueil se divise en trois parties. La première porte sur le continentalisme, la seconde sur l'identité canadienne et la troisième sur la mentalité canadienne. L'ensemble de ces textes présente une histoire des idées sur le Canada. L'approche de Smith se veut à la fois subjective, envisageant les choses du point de vue des acteurs, et objective, recherchant les causes et leurs effets. Il tente donc de comprendre, et de nous faire comprendre, le point de vue des auteurs, tout en s'efforçant de relever les influences américaines sur ces auteurs.
