Il est intuitivement évident que le contexte colonial favorise tous les stéréotypes. Depuis Jean-Jacques Rousseau, l’image du bon sauvage et de ses précieuses vertus naturelles hante l’anthropologie et a fait la bonne fortune de plusieurs générations de littérateurs, voisinant d’ailleurs sans complexes avec celle du primitif avide et sans pitié. L’impact de ces clichés, formes condensées de savoir et véritables résidus de rapports de pouvoir, est assez aisément perceptible dans les traductions de certains styles de parole traditionnels, comme le hain-teny de Madagascar. Les liens entre traduction et savoirs peuvent alors éclairer l’étendue, les ressorts et la persistance des « asymétries » au-delà même de la traduction, et montrer comment toute étrangeté (Berman, Venuti) non expurgée d’une certaine passivité à la source ne peut que reproduire les principaux raccourcis raciaux et culturels.
