L’expérience de l’hospitalisation pour un enfant atteint de cancer constitue une source de stress importante. L’enfant hospitalisé est non seulement privé de son univers familier et sécurisant, mais il se voit aussi confronté à subir divers traitements, souvent très douloureux. Il doit rapidement s’adapter à de nouvelles personnes et à un contexte de vie très différent de la vie familiale. Son besoin de sécurité est accru. Il importe donc d’offrir à l’enfant des moyens concrets permettant de mieux s’adapter à la situation stressante de l’hospitalisation. La zoothérapie, considérée dans ce projet comme étant une approche novatrice de soins, représente une solution intéressante. Elle consiste à utiliser le rapport privilégié entre l’enfant et l’animal pour aider au processus d’adaptation à la maladie et à l’environnement du milieu hospitalier. L’expérience décrite dans cet article est un projet pilote d’un an réalisé dans un département d’oncologie pédiatrique. A priori, une charge de travail déjà très lourde, une clientèle des plus vulnérables et de nombreuses contraintes venaient s’ajouter aux inquiétudes liées à la présence d’animaux dans une unité de soins tertiaires. A postiori, la rigueur du processus d’élaboration et d’implantation du projet pilote, l’engagement et l’implication soutenus des personnes bénévoles et des professionnels, la qualité des «chiens zoothérapeutes» participants, l’originalité de la démarche dans son ensemble, ainsi que la satisfaction de la clientèle et du personnel infirmier, ont contribué à en faire un succès et à établir les bases pour une implantation permanente de ce programme de soins particulier à l’intention des enfants hospitalisés atteints de cancer.
