Symbolic classification: retrospective remarks on an unrecognized invention

Abstract
Central to Rodney Needham's writing on symbolism was ‘symbolic classification’, an analytical category which, although often associated with Durkheim and Mauss, was demonstrably Needham's own coinage. This article traces the development of the usage from its first appearance in 1959 to Needham's later expression of doubt as to its meaning. Following a critical discussion of Needham's use of analogy, class inclusion, and ranking in defining ‘symbolic classification’ and distinguishing the concept so labelled from ‘hierarchical classification’, the article demonstrates the typically numerical basis of cultural schemes Needham conceived as systems of symbolic classification, the prominence of spatial distinctions in these schemes, and their possible perceptual and experiential motivation. Finally, ethnographic examples are provided of other conceptual phenomena to which ‘symbolic classification’ can profitably be applied, but which do not unequivocally fit Needham's characterization. Résumé La « classification symbolique » est un élément central des travaux de Rodney Needham sur le symbolisme. Bien que cette catégorie analytique soit souvent associée à Durkheim et à Mauss, il est évident qu’elle a étéélaborée par Needham. L’auteur retrace ici l’évolution de son usage, de sa première apparition en 1959 aux doutes exprimés plus tard par Needham quant à sa signification. L’article mène une discussion critique de l’usage par Needham de l’analogie, de l’inclusion de classe et du classement dans la définition de la « classification symbolique » et établit une distinction entre le concept ainsi désigné et la « classification hiérarchique ». Il démontre la base typiquement numérique des schémas culturels que Needham concevait comme systèmes de classification symbolique, la prééminence des représentations spatiales dans ces schémas et leur motivation perceptuelle et expérientielle possible. Pour finir, l’auteur donne des exemples ethnographiques d’autres phénomènes conceptuels auxquels la « classification symbolique » est applicable mais qui n’entrent pas sans équivoque dans la caractérisation de Needham.
